The Portes du Soleil Ski Area: Morzine, Avoriaz and beyond

Our ski chalets are all located in the pretty ski villages of Morzine Avoriaz and St Jean d’Aulps in the heart of the Portes du Soleil ski area.

The Portes du Soleil is one of the largest ski domains in the world: a vast and magical winter wonderland encompassing many of France and Switzerland’s most beautiful ski resorts. It consists of 12 linked villages and offers over 650km of slopes. It has a fantastic snow record and a massive variety of pistes – offering endless skiing and boarding potential for people of all abilities.

Saint Jean d’Aulps village also has it’s own ski area, “Espace Roc d’Enfer“. This is a hidden gem offering the perfect place for beginners to progress and untracked routes for powder lovers to explore. The area is unknown to many visitors to Morzine and so the pistes remain quiet even during the busiest weeks of the season. You often have beautiful long pistes, amidst spectacular scenary, completely to yourself. Most of our guests choose to ski at the Roc d’Enfer on at least one day during their stay.

Snow Record

Avoriaz has one of the best snow records in France with an average of 8 metres of snow per season. The resort has been crowned the snowiest resort in Europe in many recent years. The bumper snowfall is the result of the humidity building from Lake Geneva and then hitting the cold front surrounding Mont Blanc. These unique climate conditions makes the Portes du Soleil a dumping ground for snow.

The Stash

The first giant ecological snowpark in Europe

Avoriaz has always succeeded in being creative when designing its slopes and snowparks. In 2008, Avoriaz introduced to Europe a new generation of 100% natural snow playgrounds : “The Stash”.

Stash Facts
  • Burton’s philosophy was to create an environmentally friendly area in the middle of the forest that catered for a mixture of free-ride and freestyle.
  • The area enables parents and children to practice their skills together together together
  • Riding the Stash means heading into the heart of nature but on secure terrain.
  • The Stash is situated in the middle of a large expanse of un-groomed snow so it is ideal for trying out wide turns in deep powder.
  • The Stash slopes wind in and out of the trees in the Lindarets forest and are punctuated with hidden wooden obstacles.
  • You have to ski or snowboard down The Stash many, many times before you discover all of its hidden treasures.
  • The Stash can be reached via the 6 seater high-speed Prolays chairlift from the Lindarets bowl.

Avoriaz Snowcross

These un-groomed slopes offer skiers and boarders all the sensations of free powder skiing, but in perfect safety. They are actually surveyed by ski patrollers, who ensure safety by artificially setting off avalanches and fencing off any dangerous areas. In Avoriaz there are 4 marked routes indicated by signposts :

  • The Frontalière at the top of the Mossettes chairlift (1,150 metres long), a wide route down the mountain’s flanks.
  • Brochaux (1,340 metres long), a naturally bumpy wall accessible by the Brochaux chairlift.
  • The Combe des Marmottes (2,080 metres long), a playground that’s easy to get to, via the Fornet chairlift
  • The mythical Crozats run (3,122 metres long), a big wild comb which starts from the Hauts Forts and joins the world cup downhill run down to Prodains, from where you can return to Avoriaz either by chairlift or cable car.
  • The Pschott consists of several successive natural canyons. This Snowcross is more technical than its neighboring Snowcross La Marmotte.
